Block Boxee Box Updates (Block Boxee 1.2 update)

So the new Boxee Box update 1.2 is out, and it is a forced update. Unfortunately there is several problems with the update. For me I could no longer use my NAS boxes (SMB) and there is no longer a option to see apps not avalible in your region.

I have made this guide of how to downgrade and block updates of the Boxee Box. This should work with all firmware < 1.2.xxx.

What you need:
- USB stick
- Router that allows keyword blocking

IMPORTANT: If you are already on the version you want and things are working, DON’T toun on your box but goto 6 and follow the guide.

1. Download the version you want to stay on. You can download the version you want from here http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=40772 (newest 1.1.xx version is this one: (http://dl.boxee.tv/version/dlink.dsm380/1.1.3.19252/boxee.iso)

2. Put the file boxee.iso on the USB stick, and put the stick in one of the USB

3. Turn off your Boxee Box and start in recovery mode (hold the powerbutton for 5-10 sec and release it)

4. Select "Factory Restore" from the menu and restart

5. When Boxee Box starts up, join a wireless or wired network and log in with your boxee account. It is important that you login and that Boxee Box is online in this step! Note: In this step DON’T block any boxee services in your router. Don’t accept any updates if your are promted!

6. Turn off Boxee Box and enter recovery mode again (hold the powerbutton for 5-10 sec and release it)

7. Now block the following keywords in your router:
- boxee.iso or *boxee.iso*
- app.boxee.tv/chkupd/dlink.dsm380 or *app.boxee.tv/chkupd/dlink.dsm380*
If you are uncertant if you router needs wildcards "*" you can just block all four keywords above

8. From the recovery mode select "Update from USB" and wait for the update. The restart.

You should no longer be promtet for updates and all services should work, including apps.

I tried to block updates by following the guide by CaptainRewind (thanks for a good how-to) http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=35225, but apps did not work for me with only boxee.iso blocked. After first reboot I did not have access to any apps.

Blocking boxee.iso secures that no update can be downloaded, but Boxee can still check for updates. Download just fails. By blocking "app.boxee.tv/chkupd/dlink.dsm380" boxee simply cannot check for updates, and wont know that a new version is avalible.
